Too Many Transit Systems in San Francisco

June 12, 2007 by Lazy Man 2 Comments

I have to make a trip from the peninsula to San Francisco tonight. There is a very helpful website, but it’s still going to be difficult to figure out. I plugged in my origin and destination in their trip planner and it looks like it’s going to take me at least 3 changes on three transit systems to go around 20 miles. The total travel time? An hour and a half. The cost? Somewhere around $10 between the different fares there and back and parking at the station.

Back in Boston there’s on system and it’s called the T. You can more or less just buy one pass and you are good to go. My fiancee has to have a Caltrain, SamTrans, and a Bart passes handy to get to her job and perform her duties around town. Because her job has a component of travel outside the SF area, monthly passes don’t save any money either.

And if you think this is complex, I left out the Muni and cable cars in SF itself. What a mess!

Well you guys have a transit system at least :). Where I live, I will be almost dead in a few days without my own car.

I haven’t used a lot of transit systems, but I sure loved it when I was in NY.

I suppose that’s a good point. I lived in the Boston suburbs where there wasn’t much of a transit system. I guess I was spoiled by having one. However, when you live in a place that doesn’t have one, you typically can drive places and not have to pay $5 an hour for parking as I had to tonight.
