Announcing the Winner of the Mohu Leaf Antenna

May 31, 2011 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

As I promised yesterday, I’d finally stop trying to live up to my name and announce a winner to my Mohu Leaf Antenna Contest. Like the previous one I gave away, I was surprised by the number of entries. People seem to really love the Mohu. I couldn’t give away $50 Visa cards as easily I could give away a $44 Mohu Leaf. (Which still confuses me because a $50 Visa card can buy you a Mohu Leaf.)

It wasn’t just the number of entries that surprised me. It was the quality. People wrote about how they were going to be RVing and how it would help them. People wrote about how it help their parents save some money. Some people wrote to give a review of a Mohu Leaf that they’ve already bought. I was happy to see the winner of the last Mohu Leaf give a review as well (hint it was good).

It seemed somewhat fitting that when the virtual ping-pong balls stopped bouncing, the winner was “Aeko” who had the following comment: “I have a basic cable package and would love to get rid of it. Have been reading every blog concerning ota atenna. Most of them are pretty ugly. Mohu looks great and almost invisible. My income is around $1000 per month and any expense I can eliminate is a gift to me.”

Well Aeko, check your email because I’m going need your mailing address to give you this gift. And if you didn’t win, you can still buy the Mohu Leaf Indoor HDTV Antenna from Amazon. The promo code of “lazyman1” should give you an extra $4 off.

Giving Away Another Mohu Leaf Antenna

May 23, 2011 by Lazy Man 45 Comments

It seems like just yesterday, but two months ago I reviewed the Mohu Leaf, an antenna that picks up the over-the-air (OTA) HDTV signals to give you free television. It’s like the days before cable, but you actually get reception…

… and not just reception… great reception in my experience. I’m going to presume that you’ve seen HDTV before. This antenna gives you the same results that you’d get from your cable box, just without the cable channels and the cable fees. In our bedroom, we don’t have a cable box (the monthly fee gets expensive) so we only get basic channels (known as “in-the-clear” QAM channels), which in my experience is the cable companies’ code, for “all the non-cable channels.” When testing the Mohu Leaf that the company gave me to review, I simply taped the Mohu Leaf to the wall, plugged it in the back of my TV in place of my cable, and selected the option on my television to scan for OTA channels.

Boom, I had 50 crystal clear channels – all the major networks, NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and CW, plus about 45 channels of home shopping, weather, public access, and people speaking in languages that do not know. We haven’t noticed any difference from what we were getting there before, so the cable sits dangling on the floor.

People have come back to the post saying that they were surprised how good the product was too. Even today, two months after the contest has ended, people still leave comments in an effort to win one. The company was very pleased with the results they’ve gotten from the review. They were so pleased they asked me if I’d give another away. If you haven’t caught by now, the answer was, “Of course, I’d love to.”

So here’s how it’s going to work. Leave a comment between now and Thursday evening (May 26th) at 11:59PM PT if you are interested. Make sure you use a real email address, so I can contact you if you win. Those who give an interesting story on why they want a Mohu, impress me with their set up to cut the cable (as I’ve written about here and here), or anything else interesting and related to getting free television legally may get additional entries over the person who responds with a boring, “I’d like to enter.”

If you aren’t feeling lucky, you can simply buy the Mohu Leaf Indoor HDTV Antenna on Amazon. They previously set up a discount code “lazyman1” for a $4 discount, which may or may not still be active. It’s worth a shot.
