An Expensive Day Coming Up Tomorrow…

July 29, 2011 by Lazy Man 2 Comments

According to many message board it seems the Palm Treo 700 is going to be available from Sprint tomorrow. Since I’m out of contract, I hope to get it for the $399 price that’s for new subscribers. I expect that it won’t quite be easy and I’ll have to argue or threaten to go to Verizon.

If that isn’t enough, I’m taking a trip to Costco. The plasma TV that I bought not too long ago isn’t working like it did in the beginning. Whenever it goes from a light scene to a dark one, the light scene is burned in for a good 3 minutes or more. The reason I bought from Costco is that instead of having an extended warranty they have a lenient return policy. So I’m going to return the defective no-name TV and switch to a Phillips or Pioneer. It’s probably going to cost me $500 dollars for the upgrade to a name brand.

I realize this is an unusual post for a personal finance blog. However, I do skimp and save quite a bit for a couple of these luxury items.

Save money on the web

December 14, 2006 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

I’m going to highlight an older trick today, only because I don’t think too many know about it or use it. EvilSoft.org uses Thunderbird to find deals on the web. I suggest you skip down to Billy’s comment about using “Thunderbird’s ‘Saved Searches'”. It was a lot easier for me to set it up this way. Here’s how it works… 1) You set up a bunch of sources (they provided for you on the jump) 2) You set up a keyword for something you are looking to buy 3) When it’s found, Thunderbird alerts you by putting it in the right folder almost like “incoming mail”.

You can also search all the sources if you find a sudden need for say, a blender. In fact, I just did a search for blender to prove my point and there are about 7 different deals in the last ten days – brands include Magic Bullet, KitchenAid, Hamilton Beach, Oster, and Tribest.

As an added bonus you are introduced to a tool that you probably already should be using for e-mail – Mozilla Thunderbird rocks.

Groceries Savings in Boston

December 14, 2006 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

[Grocery stores seem to be fairly regional, so if you are from New England you’ll probably get more from this post than others.]

I made an interesting discovery a few months ago. It seems that Wal-Mart has excellent prices on some food staples. It’s generic brand of cheese, milk, canned vegetables, and beef jerky just can’t be beat. Even if I were to buy them in bulk at a warehouse store, I think Wal-Mart beats them. This is a little surprising to me. I always thought of Wal-Mart as a replacement to Bradlees, Ames, Caldor, and Zayre – 4 businesses that have gone under selling typical household items. So you can see why I wouldn’t think of going there for groceries.

Wal-Mart is still relatively new to Boston area – I wonder if people have really figured it out.

Palm Treo 700P announced

December 14, 2006 by Lazy Man 2 Comments

I’ve always been a huge fan of Palm Treo’s cell phones. If you are unfamilar with these phones, they are like carrying a PC in your pocket. As Trump would say, “I love them, they are they best.”

Palm has announced their latest phone today. It’s nothing revolutionary compared to the Treo 650 in my opinion, but it’s got another round of upgrades. The most important of which is that it uses a new network capable of delivering near DSL speeds of 300-600K. That means you should be able to get whatever information you need wherever you need it and without waiting for 5 minutes for it to download.

The features of the Treo 650 itself are too numerous to mention, but I do have an add-on GPS with maps and voice directions on it. An in car system could cost you $1000. The Treo’s package I have cost me a little over $200.

Buying a car for fuel efficiency

December 14, 2006 by Lazy Man 2 Comments

My fiancee has recently moved in with me and has made the sacrifice or lengthening her commute from the “get out of bed and slide into work in 10 minutes” to the “break out the iPod because it’s going to be awhile” time of 40 minutes. I have had to commute more than 40 minutes before and it’s not that bad, but losing an hour a day is a shock. I’ve thought about giving in and moving a little closer to her work (I enjoy the 10 minute commute now) when we look for the next home, but I’m not that comfortable moving that far outside of Boston. I’m already further than I really intended to ever be, but with housing prices what they are, it’s necessary.

Here’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back. She has an SUV that simply guzzles gas like no tomorrow. We can’t really get rid of it, because we always seem to be moving some big thingamajig. My car doesn’t get the greatest MPG, but it’s better. We switched cars a couple of times, but I can tell that’s not something she feels overly comfortable with. She’s mentioned possibly getting a third car for commuting. Seems like it’s not a terrible idea as long as our insurance doesn’t sky rocket and we get the condo to allow us to park a third car.

So this is where I ask for your help. If you could buy a car now as the most cost effective way to travel about 60-70 miles a day, what would you get? I’m eliminating a new cars as it would take too long to recoup the cost of gas when you factor in depreciation. I get the feeling it’s going to be between a 4-5 year old Miata, the first year the Prius was made, or some kind of Kia/Hyundai that gets decent milage.

Give me your suggestions and in a future I’ll run some rough numbers.
