Should I Think about Retiring Early?

September 24, 2019 by Lazy Man 4 Comments

I was reading an article at Adventures in Money Making where a couple explains how they retired on $2000 CDN – yes it’s not even US dollars.  And their retirement sounds like good – not like they are skimping.  Amazingly that dollar amount (around $1,760 US) is just a little over my goal for Alternative Income Streams, something that I thought I could achieve ten years.

I highly doubt that I’ll be able to retire then.  If for nothing else, my fiancee and I hope to be in the middle of raising a family.  It’s still nice to know that retirement is possible if something should happen and we can’t get to our retirement goals.

Getting a Raise – the 401k way

July 29, 2011 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

It was less than a month ago when I learned Smart Money to figure out that I’d be losing $6,613. The new job had enough perks for me to take this loss.

However, it’s a whole new ballgame today. The company is getting a 401k plan soon and it feels like I’m getting a raise. No word on if there is a match, but it’s a gain either way. I’m now really happy that I put the maximum in my 401k at my old job. It looks like I might be able finish the year with a completely maxed out 401k plan.

This may negatively impact my alternative streams of incomes plan as I won’t be able to invest as much in accessable accounts. However, I’m much better off looking out for my retirement.

Military Folks – Don’t Forget Your Thrift Savings Plan

November 7, 2006 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

I’ve been writing for nearly six months now, but I’m afraid I haven’t been taking care of the home front. My fiancee has been in the military for close to 8 years now and hasn’t really taken full advantage of the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). For those not familiar with a TSP, it’s the military equivalent of the 401k plan. This weekend, I hope to sit down and explore all the tax advantages.
I’d like to thank all those in the military that help preserve the lifestyle that we enjoy and often take for granted in the US. I hope that while you are busy taking care of us civilians in the present, you aren’t ignoring your own future.

How Much Is My 401(k) Plan Worth?

July 29, 2011 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

It turns out that my new company doesn’t offer a 401(k) plan. This was a little alarming. I can’t really think of a reason why a company wouldn’t offer one. My last company of 20 employees did. It didn’t match any of my contributions, but at least I could defer my taxes.

So it got me wondering, how much does this impact me? SmartMoney.com comes to the rescue with this article and calculator. Using it, I found that my old 401(k) plan was worth $6,613. It’s going to be disappointing to lose my 401(k) and the forced savings, but I still think I’m going to do fine.

Cheap Mortgage Rates Coming Back?

December 14, 2006 by Lazy Man 3 Comments

I hadn’t been following mortgage rates very closely over the last 6 months or so. I assumed they’d continue to rise as they have been. Just yesterday I got an interesting mail from Bankrate.com. It was an alert for mortgage prices that I set up over 2.5 years ago. Turns out that in Massachusetts you can get a 30-year fixed, 0 point, rate for 5.625% if you have perfect credit and every duck in a row. I found that’s it’s nearly impossible to get the rates posted, but even if you could get 5.875% or 6% you wouldn’t be doing half bad.
