Announcing the Winner of the Mohu Leaf Antenna

May 31, 2011 by Lazy Man Leave a Comment

As I promised yesterday, I’d finally stop trying to live up to my name and announce a winner to my Mohu Leaf Antenna Contest. Like the previous one I gave away, I was surprised by the number of entries. People seem to really love the Mohu. I couldn’t give away $50 Visa cards as easily I could give away a $44 Mohu Leaf. (Which still confuses me because a $50 Visa card can buy you a Mohu Leaf.)

It wasn’t just the number of entries that surprised me. It was the quality. People wrote about how they were going to be RVing and how it would help them. People wrote about how it help their parents save some money. Some people wrote to give a review of a Mohu Leaf that they’ve already bought. I was happy to see the winner of the last Mohu Leaf give a review as well (hint it was good).

It seemed somewhat fitting that when the virtual ping-pong balls stopped bouncing, the winner was “Aeko” who had the following comment: “I have a basic cable package and would love to get rid of it. Have been reading every blog concerning ota atenna. Most of them are pretty ugly. Mohu looks great and almost invisible. My income is around $1000 per month and any expense I can eliminate is a gift to me.”

Well Aeko, check your email because I’m going need your mailing address to give you this gift. And if you didn’t win, you can still buy the Mohu Leaf Indoor HDTV Antenna from Amazon. The promo code of “lazyman1” should give you an extra $4 off.

Giving Away Another Mohu Leaf Antenna

May 23, 2011 by Lazy Man 45 Comments

It seems like just yesterday, but two months ago I reviewed the Mohu Leaf, an antenna that picks up the over-the-air (OTA) HDTV signals to give you free television. It’s like the days before cable, but you actually get reception…

… and not just reception… great reception in my experience. I’m going to presume that you’ve seen HDTV before. This antenna gives you the same results that you’d get from your cable box, just without the cable channels and the cable fees. In our bedroom, we don’t have a cable box (the monthly fee gets expensive) so we only get basic channels (known as “in-the-clear” QAM channels), which in my experience is the cable companies’ code, for “all the non-cable channels.” When testing the Mohu Leaf that the company gave me to review, I simply taped the Mohu Leaf to the wall, plugged it in the back of my TV in place of my cable, and selected the option on my television to scan for OTA channels.

Boom, I had 50 crystal clear channels – all the major networks, NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and CW, plus about 45 channels of home shopping, weather, public access, and people speaking in languages that do not know. We haven’t noticed any difference from what we were getting there before, so the cable sits dangling on the floor.

People have come back to the post saying that they were surprised how good the product was too. Even today, two months after the contest has ended, people still leave comments in an effort to win one. The company was very pleased with the results they’ve gotten from the review. They were so pleased they asked me if I’d give another away. If you haven’t caught by now, the answer was, “Of course, I’d love to.”

So here’s how it’s going to work. Leave a comment between now and Thursday evening (May 26th) at 11:59PM PT if you are interested. Make sure you use a real email address, so I can contact you if you win. Those who give an interesting story on why they want a Mohu, impress me with their set up to cut the cable (as I’ve written about here and here), or anything else interesting and related to getting free television legally may get additional entries over the person who responds with a boring, “I’d like to enter.”

If you aren’t feeling lucky, you can simply buy the Mohu Leaf Indoor HDTV Antenna on Amazon. They previously set up a discount code “lazyman1” for a $4 discount, which may or may not still be active. It’s worth a shot.

Giving Away Free Intuit TurboTax Premier Software

April 6, 2011 by Lazy Man 12 Comments

Last week I tried to give away free money and few people wanted it. (Okay it was three $50 Visa gift cards, but that’s close enough.) A few weeks before people went crazy to enter my Mohu Leaf Giveaway. I don’t know what works and what doesn’t with you guys, but I’m going to keep trying to figure it out.*

Today, I’m going to test whether you like free Intuit TurboTax Online Premier Edition. It’s not exactly the best test, because hopefully you’ve already started your taxes… or even finished them. It’s also probably one of the least sexy of gifts to give. I’d much rather be giving away an iPad 2 a Touchpad. Nonetheless, the Premier edition of TurboTax Online costs around $80 (I found varying prices), so it should help out a few people right? If you aren’t sure whether it’s right for you, check out my TurboTax Review.

Before I get to the details of the give away, I have to get a little business out of the way. I’ll be quick. Intuit wanted me to tell you that April 15th this year is Tax Free Friday. They didn’t go into many details as to what that means. (I’m pretty sure if I buy products I’m going to get taxed on it.) They originally wanted me to give away the pre-paid codes on Friday, the 15th, so I’m going to presume that’s where it originated. However, why would I want to give away free software three days before taxes are due on the 18th? That’s crazy! So I sweet-talked them into letting me give it away earlier. I’m not afraid to stare down that gift horse – right in the mouth.

So how do you enter to win this software? Simple… leave a comment. I will pick three winners from virtual ping pong bouncy house thingy (it’s very technical). As usual, those who leave comments of some substance will get more ping pong balls. What qualifies as “of some substance?” Something that entertains me, makes me laugh, teaches me something, or just shows you put some effort into it. Those who leave a minimal, “I can haz fre tax softwearz?” comments will get fewer ping pong balls. Actually, that is a bad example as I find that at least somewhat entertaining (though don’t expect to use it now). Two other things: 1) I will only accept entries until Saturday April 9th at 11:59PM PT. 2) I’m going to need you to use your real email address so that I can email you the tax codes. I will not spam you.

I think that’s about it. Show me the comments! (And please keep the biting and eye-gouging to a minimum.)

* … as long as companies continue to give me free stuff to give to you.

Give Card Giveaway Announced (and Personal Finance Links)

April 4, 2011 by Lazy Man 5 Comments

Sometimes, I have to admit that I don’t understand you (readers). A couple of weeks ago, I gave away one Mohu Leaf Over-the-Air Antenna with a retail value of around $45 and 32 of you entered to win. This past week I gave THREE $50 Mastercard/Visa Gift Cards from GiftCards.com. You had nearly a 50% chance vs. a roughly 3% chance. Plus the prize was more valuable – it was more money and you could spend it almost however you like.

I must have not made the prizes very clear or I marketed it wrong, right?

However, let’s get to the winners. (If you are a winner and reading this before you’ve received an email you will soon.)

The three winners are:
Robin, Cynthia Rafler, and Helena.

With that out of the way, let me get to the notable personal finance links of last week:

Gift Card Giveaway from GiftCards.com

March 30, 2011 by Lazy Man 10 Comments

A couple of weeks ago, I gave away a Mohu Leaf antenna for receiving over the air signals. Today’s my birthday, and I must be a crazy because I’m the one giving out the gifts. Instead of an antenna that you may or may not use, I’m giving away something that’s almost as good as cash – Visa or MasterCard gift cards. And I’m not giving away one of them, but three! I shouldn’t take complete credit for the giveaway – this offer comes from GiftCards.com.

Buy Discount Gift Cards

For the average consumer, the biggest reason to go GiftCards.com is to pick up discount gift cards. As I look now, there are gift cards to save 10% from Applebee’s and Barnes and Noble – even 15% from Ann Taylor. There are nearly 100 merchants available at this moment, but availability of specific merchants change often. Many people would sign up for a credit card that would give them 3% cash back on things that they’d ordinary buy. It only makes sense to take a minute and look to see if you can save 10%.

Design Your Own Gift Cards

Part of the great value that a gift card represents is that they are a little like cash. You give the recipient more flexibility to buy something that they want, while still giving something a little more personalized than a couple of Andrew Jacksons. Perhaps a better compromise would be to give GiftCards.com’s personalized gift cards. These are Visa and MasterCards with your own photos and messages. You can use a pre-designed template or create your own. This gives you a more personalized, yet more flexible gift.

How to Win the Gift Cards

Today is all about giving. So I think the giveaway should be based on giving as well. (That sentence may only make sense in my head.) In the wake of natural disasters such as Katrina, Haiti, New Zealand, and the most recent Japan earthquake, I’m realizing more and more how much others need. To help with that, I’m refocusing my efforts on Setting up an Emergency Charity Fund. Let me know in the comments what you are doing to give back. The better I judge your comment, the more virtual ping pong balls you receive for the drawing. I’ll stop taking entries on Saturday April 2nd at 11:59PM and announce the winners soon after. As always please include a real address so that I can tell you that you’ve won and get your address for the gift card. (Your email address is safe, I hate spam as much as you do.)
