Buy Seasonally Discounted Items that Aren’t Seasonal

January 18, 2014 by Lazy Man 3 Comments

It’s a rare Sunday post. Just when you thought you had me figured out I switched it up on you. Bazinga!

Patriots Hat
Just a few hours to game time!

One of my favorite savings tips is to buy heavily discounted seasonal items that aren’t exactly seasonal. I found the hat to the left yesterday at a local grocery store chain at 75% with all the Christmas stuff they were trying to clear out. I have so much Patriots gear that I didn’t really need any more, but a $15 hat for $3.75? It hopped in my cart very quickly.

In a few hours the Patriots will play their most important game of the season. It’s the perfect time to gouge people with high prices, but it’s just the opposite as someone decided it is a Christmas item.

This isn’t the first time I’ve come across retailers selling seasonal items that really aren’t at a big discount. I’ve written before about how to buy candy on sale after Easter and Halloween. I have Rubbermaid containers in orange and black because they were heavily discounted after Halloween.

However, let’s get back to the important thing… the big game in a few hours. Some may say that the Super Bowl is the big game, but these are arguably the two best quarterbacks of all time. They are closer to the end of their careers than the beginning, so every time they play each could be the last.

The Denver Broncos are a great team who have scored more points than any team in NFL history. They are playing at home, and favorites in Las Vegas. That said, I optimistic about the Patriots’ chances of winning. They are one of the least penalized team while the Broncos are one of the most. They have one of the best special teams, while the Broncos has one of the worst. The Patriots are much better than average at winning the turnover battle and the Broncos are average. The Patriots have perhaps the best coach in the history of the game, the Broncos have an above average coach.

I can almost talk myself into all these little things adding up. We’ll find out in a few hours.

Nice score! I snagged a Red Sox car charger for my phone at the post-Christmas CVS sale. At 70% off, $2.25, I couldn’t resist — we only have 1 car charger, and 2 cars. There were a bunch of non-Christmas stocking stuffers on clearance.

That Patriots hat might be discounted even more right now.

    :)
