Blogging as a Stream of Income

June 12, 2007 by Lazy Man 5 Comments

I had been writing about my goal of getting my passive income to the point of covering my necessary expenses. I should have substituted “passive income” with “alternative income streams.” Blogging is really anything but passive. It’s a lot of work.

The thing is that it’s fun work, so it doesn’t appear to be work at all. There is also a passive aspect of it. Lifehacker.com is very popular blog that I follow and it makes money even when the people are done for the day. I think that’s a large reason why I had grouped income from my blog as “passive income.”

So are there degrees of work and degrees of passive income? Maybe Five Cent Nickel said it best, “I’ve wondered about this myself – If I were to stop writing, how quickly (and how far) would my revenue fall? In that sense, blogging probably isn’t passive income. However, if I can do it while watching TV and unwinding at the end of the day, then it’s not really work.”

I prefer not to say, but I don’t think the IRS will be asking me about it. I have talked with some people who are making $100 a month after 6 months of blogging and others that after a year are up to $250. I talked with one guy that implied (and I had to do a lot of math) that he made $4000 a month.

I’m not holding my breath for it to be a big factor, but I hope it could be 10-20% of my $2000 a month goal within a couple of years.

How much do you make blogging? I don’t make very much at all, myself. I don’t even make enough to consider it a passive income stream (though some weeks are better than others).

I was wondering why you went with AdBrite and other contextual ads.

Blogging is hard work, and I would hardly consider it a passive income.

While you can “Stock Up” posts in order to take a vacation, it would just start back up as soon as you came back.

Blogging as a full-time job is somewhat of a dream for me, and I hope to be in your shoes someday.
