Alternative Income Streams Progress – March 2007

March 1, 2007 by Lazy Man 12 Comments

With the start of a new month, it’s time for another update to my alternative income. Last month, I had the biggest jump forward, a near 43% gain as I went to from $50 to $71.49. This month things have really skyrocketted to more than $225.

How did I do it? My Prosper loans continue to grow which contributed a few dollars. I paid off $1000 of my HELOC which lowers my “necessary expenses” column by $10 a month. In the end, almost all the gains this month came from advertising on this blog. I’m at the point where I can pay for my groceries, Internet, cable, heat & hot water, electricity, and cell phone from my alternative income. How did I get all that advertising income? I only have you, the reader, to thank. I’ve been talking with co-workers about what makes money on the Internet and it’s all about audience. That’s the reason that Google paid billions for YouTube, with no business plan. Obviously, I’m working in a much, much, much lower scale, but the principle remains the same – if you provide something that people find interesting.

I try not to write a lot about this blog or how I make money with it, but this is the one day of the month that I bend the rules a bit. I don’t want to be a John Chow where the purpose of the blog is to discuss ways to make money with a blog (that’s my opinion on limited readings of his site). However, if you have some questions, please leave a comment. I’d say that 98% of the time, I answer the questions in a comment or in an e-mail back to the commenter.

Congrats! That is a very nice chunk of change. If you want to pass some sponsors over to my site ;) .

I’m glad to see this site finally paying off for you as I have enjoyed reading it for the past two months.

Looks you are making good progress in just half a year. Very impressive. On the other hand, there’s still a long way to go if you want to get all your “groceries, Internet, cable, heat & hot water, electricity, and cell phone” covered, :D.

BTW, should it be 3/1/2007 instead of 3/1/2006?

Very Nice. I concur about passing over a sponsor or 10. All banner ads on my site has affiliate cj ads. Any paying sponsor would replace those faster than you would believe. Google would be harder to supplant.

Thanks for the correction Sun. Oddly it’s the first time I made the 06 mistake and it’s nearly March. Go figure.

Congrats on the continued increase! Isn’t it nice to see progress? Looks like 6 months could have been the tipping point. To infinity and beyond!

[…] Lazy Man and Money in March attributes most of his $225 gain in alternative income due to advertising from his blog.   Not enough to live on, but certainly enough to cover his blogging expenses.   Given his rather prolific posting, and cross marketing, I doubt it’s really enough to compensate him for his time if it were something he didn’t enjoy doing.
