Alternative Income Streams – February 2008

February 1, 2008 by Lazy Man 10 Comments

It’s February 1st, and time once again to review my alternative income progress. Though I still call it my alternative income, it is the majority of my current income, but not all of it. I do some freelance work that I don’t include in these numbers because they are paid at an hourly wage.

This month has been a disappointment. This month my income went down from $2,219.54 to $2,007.18. One of the goals of not having a day job is to increase this alternative income. My alternative income is of irregular nature, but I need to make sure that it is trending in the right direction.

As in the past, most of my alternative income has come from various websites that I run. You are reading a main contributer now. However, Lazy Man and Health has started to produce a small income. I had been making about 10 cents an hour from it, but now it’s got to be up to around $3/hr. That’s not a good return, but I’m hoping it will continue to grow.

I’m hoping that by the end of February, I’ll debut two new websites. They will require very little work, but they won’t pay much either. I would be shocked if they bring in $10 in the first month. If they combine to bring in $200/mo. by the end of the year, I’ll be a very happy man.

$2000/month is still impressive. Have you ever divulged what fraction of that comes from blogging alone?

No, and I don’t plan to. I will say that it’s a majority at this time. I hope that it will be diversified in the future with my investment property, these upcoming websites, and dividends from stock gains. Unfortunately income from those change little from month to month. My tenant is about 8 months through a two-year lease of which will be break even for me. I know that is not going to change for the next 16 reports I make here.

I’m rather excited to see what these two new websites are like. Are they going to be static pages?

$3/hr for a blog is actually really good. Considering the number of hours most of us bloggers put in. I know mine’s nothing like that, though I got more out of it than ever before last month. But maybe $0.50-$1/hour.

While your income has gone down, you’re still doing very well. This month may be the month you break your record.

Lazy – I think you’ve got a solid income there. It did drop a bit, but I expect it will bounce back. The new sites should help a little bit in time. I’m curious too – I’m guessing they are static pages? I’m interested to see what you do and how you monetize them. :)

    Congrats on your continued success.

    Hi,
I thought You would appreciate this link. It is a song on all the ways to make money. It is a parody of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire”. http://www.suckypoems.com/2008/02/06/we-want-to-make-some-money/

$2,000 per month in alternative income and you are complaining? I know you could do even better. My question is what do you do with the extra funds that you don’t spend per month? Are you investing it in anything?

Since it’s currently a huge portion of my income (and no longer just my alternative income), I have to use it for costs of living. My investment is growing this income, while trying to maintain a quality of life (being my own boss, working when and where I want to, etc.)that few enjoy.
