I don't remember the QB's name, but I do remember when I was attending the University of Mississippi we started hearing about this guy, Jerry Rice, who was playing at Mississippi Valley State (an EXTREMELY minor college football program). He was nicknamed "Satellite" and the QB "Earth", so every play was "Earth to Satellite". My friends and I always thought he was going to hit it big, just like current 49ers LB Patrick Willis (a UM grad) who will hit it big despite the 49ers current troubles. I hear Rice did OK in the NFL.

I have never heard a single bad word about Jerry Rice - great husband, father, teammate, and one of those guys who is just an all-around role model. I know that when he started to decline, and went from the Raiders to the Seahawks to the Broncos, a lot of people said it was sad. I thought it was inspiring - here is a guy so in love with football that he's going to play it til they cut him (which he did).

I'm jealous you got to meet him. Good for you - you met a giant. I'm with Quotes - I can make a STRONG argument for him as the greatest single player ever.

Rice is not only the best receiver ever, he's the best football player ever. Of course, it's impossible to compare players across positions, but the disparity between his stats and every other receiver's makes a compelling argument.

Incidentally, last week I met Coach Pat Summitt of the TN Lady Volunteers. No one could have been more gracious.

I once unexpectedly bumped into Martin Sheen. He was quite friendly, if only for a second. Glad to hear Rice is nice. :)
