The new generation of UMPC's is also clocking in under 600$, so I guess waiting for at least 5-6 months will pay off big. MP3 players already existed, but it changed the game. The iPhone could change the game for phones, but I don't see how it's going to be as smooth as the commercials. One commercial for the web browser doesn't really show how one would click on a link. I don't see anyone typing in the commercials. My fiancee got a demo of one a couple of months ago from a lead engineer at Apple while on a airport shuttle. She came away impressed, but not being a tech person she couldn't give me any real useful details. I think the Treo 700P is one of the most capable phone on the market, but it's missing a couple of key features that I need (wi-fi for one, Skype software client for another.) I just got the Samsung SPH-A900 which is an amazingly good phone able to do internet, email, music and video. I'm sure that your carrier has something similar and for what you are willing to pay and what you want this device to do, a mobile phone sounds like exactly what you're looking for.
