It is incredibly cheap to manufacture DVDs, and companies realized that it can be a cash cow. Sure, it's not a ton of cash for each unit, but it's money that wouldn't have been coming in the door otherwise. If you really want to watch some cool stuff from the 80s, The Smurfs are now out on DVD. It’s crazy how many DVDs can be purchased for $4-$5 these days.
