This is a great post! I have actually attended free-for-all wedding dress sales where everyone waits in line for hours, the doors open, and you better watch your back, or be trampled! If you don’t have a team of women there to help you divide and conquer, there’s no point in attending. Just stay home, shop online, and avoid the hassle…if you’re set on having a certain gown.

Otherwise, I think the scuba wedding is a good idea…everyone in wetsuits, no makeup, no hair dresser…and you get your exercise, too. 8-)

And the other suggestions people put forward are usually to make your own, look in nearby second-hand / charity shops, use your mother’s / sister’s / aunt’s, get a bridesmaids dress in white, be more alternative and don’t have a white dress at all.

I think the naked wedding sounds interesting. Pity that in the UK weddings must be in public, and public nudity is generally illegal. Certainly would be memorable though.

You can also buy a beautiful white corset from a lingerie type store or ebay (they sell corsets meant to be worn outside the bedroom as well) and then just get a skirt made. It is much cheaper than buying and altering a dress, it gives you a real custom look, and it is forgiving about small changes in the brides size between the time of purchase and the big day.

There is a place in Western Pennsylvania (Sharon, PA – just outside Youngstown Ohio) called “The Winner” that has an outlet with wedding dresses starting at $15.00. I sometimes see people arriving by busload to visit there. That is where my daughter got one of the three dresses she bought for her wedding.
