Mattress Discount Season?

Energi Gal and I stepped into a Macy's Furniture store yesterday in hopes of putting a mattress on our registry.  It feels a little weird to put something so expensive on the list.  I can't imagine that 20 our closest friends are going to coordinate such a purchase.  However, Energi Gal has a friend who just received a wine fridge as a wedding gift.  The possibility is there, so we might as well put on something on the registry that we can use.

As we looked around we noticed that almost every mattress was on clearance at nearly 60% off.  I didn't think much about it except that it's going to be a lot tougher for people to buy the mattress if it's not on sale.  We asked the salesman if he could add the mattress of our choice to the registry (a $900 Sterns and Foster).  He suggested that it would be pointless since the 2007 models will be coming in a few weeks and these would all be discontinued.  I asked, "Is that why all these mattresses are on clearance?"  He nodded.

We don't shop around enough to know whether this was truly a discount or if they just raised the original price to make it look like a deal.  It puts us at a big disadvantage.  If this is really the deal that it appears perhaps we should breakdown and buy the mattress right now.  The alternative of putting it on the registry as a long shot doesn't seem that appealing.  We are also hoping to not have to wait until next year if this really is mattress discount season.

What are your thoughts?  Anyone out there know if there really is a mattress discount season?

I got my mattress at Value City. I bought the $600 cheap queen-sized that they had on sale. They delivered me the $1500 Simmons BeautyRest “Top-O-The-Line” queen mattress. I did not know it until after the movers had left, but when I got home from work and saw it, I was very impressed.

Doesn’t have anything to do with the post really, but it made me think of it.

You spend one third of your life in bed. Hopefully your bed will contribute to a great marriage(nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Get a really good mattress, whether you’re paying for it or someone else is.

Good point the spending a third of my life in bed. Still once I’m asleep, I don’t seem to notice the difference.

[...] LM: I think I need to see how this all breaks down. It doesn’t seem to add up near $1400. I fail to see how you are going to get $1400 of value out of it. We could get the really nice mattress. Something seems insane. [...]

I’m in the market for one of these as well and wondered what the season was… Are you telling me that the 2007 models are on their way and we should buy one asap as well? Have you found any further info on this?
